The Hobbit — Legacy Set Review

Magic: The Gathering · by Andrew Ahern · August 5, 2026

Another one? Already? What’s that? Two!?!?! Mystery Boosters will have to wait till I’m done reading these Hobbit cards…

…Alright, here we go…

I’m guessing most of these cards won’t see real Legacy play, but there are a smattering that look interesting, especially for the brewers.

Mechanics

Storied

If you control three or more artifacts, legendaries, and/or Sagas, you have an enduring story for the rest of the game.

This is a trivially easy-to-achieve "City's Blessing." If the bonuses are good, cool.

Recruit

Draw a card, then discard a card. If you discarded a nonland card, create a 1/1 white Human Soldier creature token.

Connive but 1/1s. If a 1/1 is better than a +1/+1 counter, this will be pretty decent.

Hone Counters

Each hone counter on an Equipment grants +1/+0 to equipped creature.

I guess this is a thing.

Adventures

Excellent mechanic; we already know this.

Amass Goblins

Add the goblin subtype to your orc army, which isn’t nothing since Goblins has been a real deck in Legacy.

Commander Set

If there is ever a dwarf deck (again?) it will likely play {Magda, Brazen Outlaw}. In that case this replaces the mana spent to cast it, sort of. Definitely keep this in mind when you inevitably try to port your Magda cEDH pile to Legacy.

They’ve made food relevant in Pauper, but have yet to crack that nut in Legacy. They’re trying again here, but I don’t think this is the food card that will break through.

Don’t get me wrong, you can produce a ton of mana with this and {Night of Sweets’ Revenge}. Maybe there’s something there, but I think there are plenty of better ways to produce gross amounts of mana, and faster.

Unlike Atraxa/Emrakul, Smaug doesn’t ostensibly win you the game when it enters (or attacks). What it does do is go infinite with {Chain Lightning}. What you do with that is up to you (I’m certainly not doing that).

This is quite the card to put on the battlefield after a {Goblin Lackey} gets through. Sadly, Bolg is too expensive for Muxus to cheat out. Maybe someday we’ll see someone try {Reanimate} in Goblins again, alongside {Fissure Wizard}. Goblin Reanimator might actually be a fun FNM deck with some of the Green Goblin variants from the Marvel / Spider-Man sets.

Main Set

{Ocelot Pride}, {Ajani, Nacatl Pariah}, {Voice of Victory}, {Orcish Bowmasters}. I think {Belladonna Took} might have a home. I don’t know the deck well enough to tell you what to cut, but this seems worth trying at least.

{Glaring Fleshraker} and {Kozilek’s Command} also create a lot of tokens and see regular Legacy play.

You know you’ve been playing too much Pauper when this card starts to look playable. {Thundertrap Trainer}(/{Most Decrepit Old Bird}) seems fun with this though.

This is essentially {Puresteel Paladin} 5-8. Kili's mana cost is what makes me write about this card. You can cast him off of {Urza's Saga}, which contributes to the "Storied" mechanic. In fact, {Urza's Saga} gives you an "enduring story" even without making a construct; Kili will see himself, {Urza's Saga}, and the {Colossus Hammer} you just searched for with {Urza's Saga} before it goes to the graveyard. And then you draw a card.

Will {Colossus Hammer} make a return to Legacy? I’m not qualified to make that guess.

This is close to {Dreadhorde Arcanist}, but you do have to spend mana to cast the spells from your graveyard, which isn't great. That being said...it is [u], is a cost reducer, and can also cast artifacts from the graveyard. The cost reduction also affects flashback, foretold/adventured cards.

The {Mishra’s Bauble} you cast with this gets to go back to your graveyard to be cast again, but needing to attack to do this is not so great. This card will be tested, but I’m unsure if it will stick around.

[3][u][u] is a lot, especially with 2 blue pips. I think you'd rather play {The One Ring}, {Mystic Forge}, or {Song of Creation} depending on the deck. I could be wrong, though.

"Enter" instead of "cast" is pretty big. {Pinnacle Emissary} could draw a lot of cards, but you'll have to have spent six mana to start, which means your hand will likely be empty.

This bird is similar to {Thundertrap Trainer}. The versatility of just being a flyer for [u] if you can't afford to cast the adventure is something too. {Speak Secrets} putting cards into your graveyard can be better than going to the bottom of the library, and {Speak Secrets} can grow your {Murktide Regent}.

On the downside, this only really trades with {Delver of Secrets}. Pretty much everything else kills or blanks it. Maybe this is worth testing in {Thundertrap Trainer}'s spot. I guess it depends on how often "offspring" comes up.

This might be my favorite piece of art from the set.

There are many ways to get this same sort of effect way easier / better than what {Getaway Barrel} offers. That being said, there may be some fun to be had here. {Greater Gargadon} ain't the worst to pair with this. You'll randomly get a 9/7 or an Emrakul/Atraxa. Main deck {Crash} to deal with {The Fantasticar} or break a Barrel? Why not?

Someone at your local that misses playing actual elves instead of "Cradle Control" will try this, and I bet it will feel great. One interesting aspect is that it allows you to find {Craterhoof Behemoth} off of {Eldritch Evolution}, which is cheaper than {Natural Order} (you should still play {Natural Order} instead of {Eldritch Evolution}).

Alright, hear me out… what if we cast this with {Mizzix Mastery}... There might be something fun in there. That’s all I got.

Remember when I was talking about {Reanimate} in Goblins? Why not just ramp out the big boys instead? I’m looking forward to seeing what the Goblins players come up with after this set.

These abilities aren’t gated. {Skirk Prospector} makes mana for sacrificing goblins. {The Great Goblin} might do some things.

There are some neat things you can do with this card that won’t see any Legacy play. I kind of want to plot {Glamdring, Foe-hammer} with {Jace Reawakened} to cast {Gleam of Death} for free.

I’d also like to play some buyback cards with this. Equip {Birgi, God of Storytelling} and go infinite with {Haze of Rage}/{Seething Anger} into bigger spells or {Seething Touch}.

I think this is the best card in the set for Legacy. Giving all your legendary cards Grandeur is pretty powerful. I can see this discarding an extra {Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth} or {Boseiju, Who Endures} to draw one and Dredge 3.

You can discard your extra {Mox Opal}s/{Emry, Lurker of the Loch}s/{Tamiyo, Inquisitive Student}s/etc. to fill your hand back up. If you’re in a situation where you don’t want to play the long game, you can make one of your extra large {Urza's Saga} constructs unblockable. I’ll definitely play this card, and possibly in multiples.

So this is fetchable and {Cori-Steel Cutter} reduces the activation, but I don’t want this in [u][r] Tempo. Maybe there’s a home for {The Lonely Mountain} with {Cori-Steel Cutter} and {Belladonna Took}. Maybe next year’s Kamigawa set will give us some good equipment creatures. {The Lonely Mountain} is interesting, but I don’t think it’s good enough.

Power-Conduit’s-New-Friends Section

I’ve wanted {Power Conduit} to be a thing since its printing, and every set I see more toys to pair with it. Nothing ever comes to fruition…

Besides the award for Best Card Name of the set, you could blank all of your opponents' creatures or have a {Phyrexian Arena} that doesn’t hurt.

{Thoughtseize} every turn sounds pretty annoying to play against.

The addition of landfall to this saga will stack with {Power Conduit}. Repeating it one time means your fetch lands create four 1/1 elves.
