Star Trek Spoilers Just Dropped a Bombshell as MagicCon Approaches

With MagicCon right around the corner, Wizards of the Coast (WotC) just dropped a massive spoiler that has Magic: The Gathering players and Trekkies losing their minds.

We already knew the upcoming Universes Beyond: Star Trek set would have incredible art, flavor text, and mechanics. But the big news? The absolute crown jewels of this set are seven ultra-rare, signed surge foil cards. Actual signatures from iconic cast members printed directly onto the cards.

So far, we know two of the seven signed cards. The Chase is On: Kirk and Janeway are Confirmed. We've seen Captain James T. Kirk (signed by the legend himself, William Shatner) and Captain Kathryn Janeway (signed by Kate Mulgrew).

Seeing these signatures on beautiful surge foil card stock is a dream come true. A Star Trek shock land is cool, and cards like "Hope is our constant even at warp speed" bring all the right thematic vibes; it's these signed captain cards that will be the ultimate chase.

If there are seven cards total, it makes sense for all of them to be Captains. So who are the other five?

If WotC wants to capture the vast, interconnected history of Star Trek spanning television, movies, and even animation, here are five bold and slightly chaotic predictions for the remaining signed captain cards.

Captain Liam Shaw (signed by Todd Stashwick)

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 was, without a doubt, some of the best Trek television we’ve had in decades. It did what modern Star Wars wishes it could do: bring back the beloved cast of The Next Generation, gave them genuine, earned emotional moments, and let them shine without overshadowing the new era.

The breakout star of that season was Captain Liam Shaw of the USS Titan-A. He was cynical, blunt, deeply traumatized by the Battle of Wolf 359, and absolutely brilliant.

{U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class} by Pablo Mendoza

Captain Morgan Bateson (Signed by Kelsey Grammer)

Let’s go deep-cut, but incredibly high-profile. Remember the classic TNG episode "Cause and Effect" where the Enterprise is stuck in a time loop? At the end of the episode, they rescue a ship that had been trapped in a temporal anomaly for 90 years: the USS Bozeman, commanded by none other than Captain Morgan Bateson—played by Kelsey Grammer.

He only appeared in that one episode (though his character's lore expanded beautifully in the novels), but the sheer novelty of having a Kelsey Grammer-signed Magic card is too good to pass up. Just imagine pulling a surge foil Frasier Crane in uniform. It’s exactly the kind of wild crossover energy Universes Beyond was made for.

Captain Hikaru Sulu (Signed by George Takei)

"Oh my..."

Yes, Captain Sulu. He spent years as the helmsman of the Enterprise, but in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, we finally saw him in the big chair commanding the USS Excelsior. He was magnificent.

If we get a Captain Sulu card, the art absolutely has to feature him holding his teacup during a massive shockwave—one of the coolest, most nonchalant moments in sci-fi history. A surge foil signed by George Takei would easily be one of the most sought-after cards in the set.

{Munitions Enthusiast} by Rémi Jacquot

Admiral Richard Barnett (Signed by Tyler Perry)

Okay, this one might feel like a bit of a cheat because his title is Admiral in the 2009 J.J. Abrams Star Trek film, but let’s be real: you have to be a captain before you make admiral!

Including Tyler Perry in an MTG set would be absolutely legendary. He commanded Starfleet Academy in the Kelvin Timeline, and having his signature on a high-end MTG chase card is the exact kind of delightful, "How is this real life?" crossover that would make the entire gaming community stop and stare.

Captain Carol Freeman (Signed by Dawnn Lewis)

We need representation from the animated side of the universe, and Star Trek: Lower Decks is pure gold. Captain Carol Freeman of the USS Cerritos spent seasons dealing with second-contact chaos, weird anomalies, and her own chaotic daughter, Mariner.

Wizards could do something incredibly unique here: a double-sided card, or two distinct versions. One side could feature the animated Captain Freeman, and the other could feature a live-action depiction of the incredible actress Dawnn Lewis in a physical Starfleet uniform. Having Dawnn Lewis sign this card would be a massive win for the Lower Decks fandom.

The Holodeck is Real

Is this list a little wild? Absolutely. But Star Trek has always been about pushing boundaries and embracing the fun—after all, the cast of Cheers once hung out on the holodeck.

If WotC really wants to make the Star Trek MTG set an unforgettable crossover, filling those remaining five slots with a mix of beloved franchise veterans, breakout modern stars, and hilarious high-profile cameos is the way to do it.
