Getting Got With Goose: Duress Crew Classic Legacy Canadian Threshold

Magic: The Gathering · by Brian Knopp · August 17, 2026

I played Canadian Threshold at the inaugural Duress Crew Classic Legacy event on Aug. 16, 2026. Twenty-five people converged upon Great Stories in Whitinsville, MA, to pay tribute to a bygone era of Legacy. It was nice to sling dual lands without the abundance of design mistakes that have become all too commonplace in Legacy.

Editor's note: Classic Legacy is a fixed card pool format that spans Alpha through Rise of the Eldrazi with a unique banlist.

I played some Legacy during this era, but I didn't really fall in love with a deck until {Delver of Secrets} was printed, after which I played [r][u][g] for a solid decade or so. I was excited to play dual lands and 100% ready to ride with {Nimble Mongoose} and {Tarmogoyf} once again.

In figuring out my list, I was suspicious of the traditional one-mana countermagic suite of 4 {Spell Snare} and 4 {Stifle}. I'm all too familiar with how these cards are excellent when they connect but are situational. Playing only 18 lands, you can get stuck in positions where you have one land and must commit to holding up {Stifle}. The opponent, recognizing the play pattern, simply doesn't walk into it, and you get stuck holding up {Stifle} while they develop their board.

I also wasn't sure how important {Spell Pierce} would be in the metagame. In theory, it's useful in the early game but doesn't punish you for tapping out to develop your board the way {Spell Snare} does, or leave you feeling like you've missed your chance to {Stifle} a fetchland. So I played 19 lands to avoid getting stuck on one land and a mix of {Spell Pierce}, {Spell Snare}, and {Stifle}.

I also opted to play 2 {Vendilion Clique} rather than any copies of {Rushing River} or {Wipe Away}. {Vendilion Clique} was the closest thing available to {Delver of Secrets}.

Round on vs. Brian Sui — Dredge

Game One

I {Force of Will} and {Daze} a couple of enablers and {Wasteland} some lands. Unfortunately, he had infinite enablers and lands.

Game Two

I kept a hand that could answer enablers, but he was on the slow-dredge plan. I didn't draw {Tormod's Crypt} and lost in short order.

Tournament Record: 0-1

Round Two vs. Jacob Murphy — [g][w][b] Junk

I won in three.

Game Three

I made a questionable decision not to {Force of Will} a {Pernicious Deed} with {Vendilion Clique} on an otherwise empty board, thinking it would be better to save {Force of Will} for a big [g] creature. Thankfully, I drew all three copies of {Submerge} to cross the finish line.

Tournament Record: 1-1

{Warren Weirding} by Matt Cavotta

Round Three vs. Phillip Lorain — [r][g][b] Goblins

I win in three.

The big [g] creatures did their thing against the little [g] Goblins.

I kept him off [b] mana, and I don't believe he resolved a {Perish} or {Warren Weirding} the entire match. I drew {Pyroclasm} in Game Three, which made things pretty straightforward.

Tournament Record: 2-1

Round Four vs. Neal Sacks — [g][w][r] Zoo

I lost in three.

He had {Tarmogoyf} and {Knight of the Reliquary} supported by {Path to Exile}.

The game I won was on the back of {Stifle} and {Wasteland}.

Tournament Record: 2-2

{Loyal Retainers} by Solomon Au Yeung

Round Five vs. William Moore — [g][w][b][r] Loyal Retainers Survival

Game One

I got too aggressive with a {Spell Snare} that should have been saved for {Survival of the Fittest}.

Game Two

He resolved {Survival of the Fittest}, but I got his life total low enough to get there with double {Lightning Bolt}.

Game Three

I kept {Survival of the Fittest} off the board. At some point, {Fire} took out two {Mesmeric Fiend}s, and my green creatures and more burn went the distance.

Tournament Record: 3-2

I finished the day in 9th place. Classic Legacy did not fail to deliver, and it was awesome to play with all my old favorites once again.

Conclusions

{Spell Pierce} wasn't good. It seems as though people did, in fact, know what they were doing by leaning hard into {Spell Snare} and {Stifle} back in 2010. There was some {Show and Tell} and {Trinisphere} in the room, but I missed those pairings.

I was happy playing 19 lands. Flooding wasn't an issue, and I liked casting my spells. I liked {Vendilion Clique} as an additional threat and think it was better overall than {Rushing River} or {Wipe Away}.

Four {Submerge} in the sideboard seemed like a necessity to beat opposing {Knight of the Reliquary}s and {Tarmogoyf}s. {Tombstalker }decks are often splashing [g] as well.

{Vendilion Clique} by Michael Sutfin

Another card I considered was {Gilded Drake}, which seems interesting against the format's big chonkers. There is a cute interaction with {Submerge}: steal their creature with {Gilded Drake}, then {Submerge} the {Gilded Drake} you gave them.

Overall, I'm not sure where Canadian Threshold stands in the metagame. [r][u][g] Dreadstill and [r][u][g] {Natural Order} present good options for going over the top of a metagame with a lot of large creatures. I could also see a more traditional version of Canadian Threshold, maxing out on {Stifle} and {Submerge}, being stronger than my build. Either way, I'll definitely keep showing up to these events and jamming some flavor of [r][u][g].
