Stomping Around Classic Legacy
As I sit down to write up this month's Classic Legacy Webcam League report. I realize I won't be playing Premodern this week. This is the final week of Marching Band Season.
All three of my children are in band; two are in marching band this year. This week we have the “One More Time” Band show, where the marching band will play every song they performed this year, and the following day is the Band Banquet.
This is also my eldest’s senior year, so this is his last time doing any of this. I am happy to miss a weekly for it, and I am looking forward to the show. The kids work hard and do an amazing job.
This month, for Classic Legacy, I piloted a Dragon Stompy List. I played against it my first month playing Classic Legacy and found it interesting. So why not give it a shot?

DECKLIST_END
The premise is simple. Get a lock piece down in Chalice on 1 or Trinisphere early, then punish greedy decks with 8 blood moon effects and start beating down with efficient creatures. I enjoyed the deck, and it felt solid in my average performance this month. Let's get into my four matches and see how things played out.

{Rakdos Pit Dragon} by Kev Walker
Match One vs. Feder | [r][g] Goblins
Game One
I stave off the early swarm and start to recover. I couldn't draw a second creature all game, and he eventually overran me with his goblins.
Game Two
I stabilized, got a Dragon Lord down, and leveled up to a 4/4 flyer fairly quickly. I ripped a second Firespout off the top of my deck and won.
Game Three
I got an early Rakdos Pit Dragon down and emptied my hand. The Pit Dragon is a beast and closed the game faster than the goblins could answer. This was my first time playing the card, and man, it is impressive when your hand is empty. Interesting back-and-forth in this matchup, and I think my list overall needs a little more sweepers and creature removal. I start 1-0 after 3 games, so we’re not going to complain.

{Trinisphere} by Tim Hildebrandt
Match Two vs. Roland | Naya Zoo
Roland sent me a deck pic of his list. Don’t worry, I solicited the deck pic. So I will share it at the bottom of the match breakdown.
Game One
Turn 1 Blood Moon effect, followed by a Turn 2 Chalice for 1, made a big difference, and I won.
Games Two and Three
These games were very different stories. I sided in a lot of removal and sweepers. Well, all that I have, at least. The problem was I couldn’t find them anywhere near fast enough. Roland had two very good draws vs. my hands, and I may not have mulliganed aggressively enough for this matchup. Roland takes the match 2-1, putting me at 1-1.

{Painter's Servant} by Mike Dringenberg
Match Three vs. Alphie | Painter CounterTop
These games ended early, even if they took a few turns to close out. In both games, I had Chalice for one on turn one, and Alphie had no answer. Each game went to the mid-game, but shutting down the top early was the key. I enjoyed the conversation while playing the game and hope to see how Alphie fixes the list moving forward. Up 2-1 going into my last match of the month.
Match Four vs. Dvraska | [u][w][r] Jace Top Control
We had two close games that I eventually lost, but they were fun and grindy.
Game One
I get an Arc Slogger down and do some damage. He cast Jace, and I had to use the Arc Slogger to keep him in check or remove blockers to get Jace down. Eventually he gets more creatures than I can deal with and takes the game after finding a sword for my Slogger.
Game Two
With counter magic and a greedy mana base, I keep 4 Blood Moon effects, a Chrome Mox, and a land on a mulligan to 6. I didn't find a second land until turn 4. I fight back into the game, but his second Jace goes unchecked and eventually gets me down. I think if I find a land on turn 2 I end up taking the second game and we see how game 3 plays out. Good match and a very good player piloting a solid control deck.

{Sensei's Divining Top} by Michael Sutfin
I finished 2-2 and didn't make the top 4. I think the deck has some legs and may revisit it in the future. Maybe with more reps I can get down some of the harder mulligan choices and improve with it. I just signed up for the November league and need to figure out which deck I want to try.
Until next time, I hope you enjoyed the read, learned something, or maybe both.
