I consider myself a fairly competitive Sorcery player. I don’t really keep track of my win-loss rating, but I’m usually in the top 50% of the room. Being in the top half of the room isn’t really a claim to fame. But that's roughly a coin flip, for the sake of odds.
In any given game, I have about a 50% chance of winning. I accomplish this by nearly always piloting a straightforward build, with a clear path to victory. I don't like super-control builds unless they also have a one-turn kill (OTK) option built in.

In most larger tournaments, I prefer a no-nonsense aggro build. Something as simple and consistent as possible. My resume of notable showings:
2nd place | Constructed, SorceryCon 2024 (84 players)
3rd place | Limited Cornerstone Championship, GenCon 2025 (100+ players)
1st place | Constructed Cornerstone Championship LGS 2025 (26 players)
3rd place | Limited Championship SorceryCon 2026 (120+ players)
Obviously, you can’t just bake Sorcery to a coin toss, but you can, in a way. Hear me out. If you have a straightforward ‘go for the throat’ strategy, you're trying to end the encounter as quickly and efficiently as possible. In the end, either your opponent can stop you from winning, or they can’t.
If they can’t stop you, you won the coin flip. Do you know the odds of flipping heads five out of six times? The probability is roughly 1/10. If you win five rounds in a six-round Sorcery event, you will almost certainly make top 8. If you play a straightforward build that can pound out a 50% win rating, you have roughly a 10% chance of making top 8 in any given event with 64 people or fewer. If you play in 10 large events, you are pretty likely to make top 8 at least once.

Use a straightforward plan of attack: occasionally put together 5-6 wins during an event, and you’ll make the top 8. With this attitude, you have roughly a 10% chance of sitting at those top tables. Also, it’s Sorcery! So have fun and relax. Even when it’s not your day, you are just churning those bad games out of the way, til you can put 5-6 good ones in a row, for when it will be your day!
